Amy's Cafe Down by the River

Overall Rating: 2.5/5
Budget: $10-12/person
Address: 103 W Cambridge St., Fredericksburg VA 22405

When we travelled to Virginia for the July 4th weekend, we tried to walk around the historic place but was not able to find a place where we wanted to eat. So, we decided to turn the GPS on towards home and just stop for lunch wherever. We haven't travelled more than 5 miles when we found a great-looking place standing nicely on the corner of a street. It was one of the restaurants I read in the brochure - one that we got from the visitor area. I also thought I saw some good ratings, but to my surprise... Mmm.. Just read my comments about the food.

Food
This tuna sandwich and soup was for me. I liked the tuna sandwich, it tastes like the regular one you'll find at deli shops. They have other kinds of bread and it's up to you if you want it toasted. I went for the plain and simple. The potato soup on the other hand, I thought needs more spices added to it. The taste was blunt, imagine eating a boiled potato with nothing added to it. There's a salty taste that you'll get from the meat. Without the meat, I wouldn't really try to finish the bowl. I enjoyed the bedeviled eggs and even took my daughter's (because she doesn't eat eggs).
This was my husband's, while the server was telling us some 'food of the day', he chose the chili con carne thing. He said he didn't really liked it but he had to finish it because he needed to eat. That side he said was supposed to be a blue cheese, he tried to taste it once and didn't finish because he said he didn't like the texture - like it was already chewed. Eww.
I can't say much about my daughter's Macaroni and Cheese but doesn't it look familiar? I would buy a box of Kraft Mac&Cheese in a heartbeat and it would be able to feed the three of us. As for the fries, it was so-so. I don't think anything was added to it at all. Some mayo and ketchup would be great, or even salt!
Cleanliness
I'd say there was no need for me to wipe the table and chairs. I also found no traces of leftovers on the table and even on the floor.

Kid-Friendliness
We ate outside and didn't need a high chair. I saw some toddlers sitting on one inside. It's good that they have a kids menu and I guess kids would be able to eat the ones on the regular menu too, just like the soup and sandwich I ordered.

Customer Service
Our server was friendly but I thought she doesn't visit us often so it took a few minutes for her to refill our drinks. It's a good thing it wasn't that hot outside and they have ceiling fans, but we were thirsty!

Complimentary Stuff
Free parking and additional parking in front of the restaurant.

So, having tried and tested dining at Amy's Cafe, are we going back? Sorry, but no. We paid approximately $30 for them including the drinks and taxes but not the tip. I thought it was expensive for the kind of food. I don't think it's worth it. I'd rather eat at a fastfood or foodcourt at the mall.

  4. It could be frustrating to sit and wait in a restaurant and then find out that you don't like the food. I am not a picky eater, but at least I want to get my money's worth. Thanks for sharing.
