How To Make Your Own Milk At Home

I made that cup of almond milk! Oh yes, I did! :)
I never imagined making my own milk at home, like seriously? Be honest, have you ever thought about that? I used to think I can only find them at the stores because it'll be next to impossible for me to take care of milk-producing mammals. Well,  well, well, I was wrong! The idea of using nuts never occurred to me. And this gets a little bit more exciting, because for the first time in forever, I am going to share how you can prepare milk right at your own home!

I just got to introduce you first with the product I found at Amazon.com, the Bigger and Better Nut Milk Bag!
Ellie's Best - Bigger and Better Nut Milk Bag
Before using your nut milk bag for the first time, make sure to follow the link to your FREE e-book on the package label and watch the video for directions on how to get the most out of your bag. At first, I totally have no idea on how to start. It really helps a lot when you read the packaging first. :)
Nut Milk Bag Recipes E-Book

After you have downloaded the e-book, you'll be ready to learn how to make yummy and easy to prepare recipes. I found a lot of interesting things to do with my nut milk bag after reading the e-book, including a cold brew coffee!

Here's a starter recipe for 4 cups of milk. I only have 1/4 cups of almond left so I divided the recipe by 4. I also don't have dates so I substituted sugar.

Basic Almond Milk Recipe
1. Soak 1 cup raw almonds in 3 cups of purified water overnight
2. Drain and rinse
3. In a blender add:
      Soaked almonds
      2-4 dates (or other sweetener)
      1/2 tsp of vanilla extract
      1/4  tsp salt
      4 1/2 cups purified water

Time to start the blender!
4. Blend on high speed until the mixture is finely blended, about 1 minute.
5. Position the bag over a large bowl or pitcher and pour in the nut milk puree.
Separate the pulp using the nut milk bag.
6. Twist and squeeze the bag gently, allowing the filtered milk to collect until the pulp is dry.
You got to squeeze it too!
7. Refrigerate immediately and serve well chilled.
Now that's what you call fresh milk!
Look at how fresh it looks! You are getting excited in making your own milk, are you? I got to say, it's actually delicious! It's has a nutty taste (of course) that similar to coconut milk but it smelled better because of the vanilla. I never knew I could make them. I'd probably do it often. And maybe I'll use that kind of milk when baking!

FYI, besides using the nut milk bag to make your homemade milk, you can also use it as:
  • Blender Juicer
  • Yogurt Strainer
  • Cold Brew Coffee Maker
  • Indispensable for Cheese Makers
  • Perfect Kefir Making Tools
  • Sprouting Bag
I never knew one bag could do so much! Not just that, it is easy to clean and it dries really fast! I hope they also make a strainer out of that material. I'll get a dozen! ;)

    1. Awhile ago my mom made coffee and didn't notice the filter was folded so some coffee grounds went with our brewed coffee. I immediately thought about filtering it with this nut milk bag. It worked of course. :) Start to realize more of its uses. :D

  6. Seems to be pretty easy if you follow the directions. I am curious to know what the cost difference it when making your own or purchasing it from the grocery store. If it is more economical, and obviously healthier, I am in!

    1. Hi Karen, it is easy. it only takes awhile because you need to soak the nuts. I think buying from the grocery store will save you a few bucks (those almond nuts doesn't come cheap). The thing I love about this is I know what ingredients I used. :)

  8. I also use my nut milk bag to make almond milk, horchata (rice milk drink), random straining of different concoctions and oat milk which is so yummy plus more cost effective compared to what almonds cost. I notice in the photo that your almonds look white. Did you take the skin off of them?

I got a little impatient and would squeeze the bag trying to make it go through quicker but DON'T DO THAT.. it will only exit liquid through the seams not the mesh and you end up with material in the cup that should've stayed in the bag. I've gone through quite a few bags and my favorite by far is the hemp nut milk bag. This is a wonderful bag too. They all get the job done.
